Objective:
The main goal of Gin Rummy is to be the first player to reach a specific number of points, typically 100 or 150.
Setup:
- Use a standard 52-card deck.
- Each player is dealt 10 cards if there are 2 players, and 7 cards if there are 3 or 4 players.
- The remaining deck forms the draw pile, and the top card is placed face-up next to it to start the discard pile.
Gameplay:
- Drawing: On your turn, you can either draw the top card from the draw pile or the discard pile.
- Melding: After drawing, you can lay down valid sets and runs of cards face-up on the table. A set is three or four cards of the same rank, and a run is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit.
- Discarding: To end your turn, discard a card onto the discard pile.
Knocking and Going Gin:
- If your unmatched cards (deadwood) total 10 points or fewer, you can "knock" to end the round.
- If you have no unmatched cards (all cards are part of sets or runs), you can "go Gin" and end the round immediately.
Scoring:
- Face cards are worth 10 points, aces are worth 1 point, and numbered cards are worth their face value.
- The non-melded cards in the losing player's hand are added to the winner's score.
- If the knocker's deadwood is worth fewer points than their opponent's, they score the difference.
End of Round:
- After a player knocks or goes Gin, the other player reveals their cards.
- The player with the lower deadwood score scores the difference in points.
- If the knocker's deadwood is worth more, the knocker is penalized by the difference plus a 10-point bonus for the other player.
Winning:
The game continues until a player reaches the agreed-upon number of points.
